The geographic coordinate system uses latitude and longitude to represent locations on Earth. Latitude and longitude can be expressed in two formats:

• Decimal Degrees (DD): Uses decimals, for example 39.9042°N, 116.4074°E (Tiananmen Square, Beijing)
• Degrees, Minutes, Seconds (DMS): Uses degrees, minutes, and seconds, for example 39°54'15.12"N, 116°24'26.64"E

Conversion formula: Decimal = Degrees + Minutes/60 + Seconds/3600. Latitude ranges from -90° to +90° (positive for north, negative for south), longitude ranges from -180° to +180° (positive for east, negative for west).
